This is an ancient UPC kit I got from Brian (4 wheels) that I promised I'd build . It was originally a motorized kit that is somewhat accurate and anything but, depending on which part you're looking at. Starting with the tub, this is it:
Some of it had been built, so a bit of cleanup, and some holes plugged. These parts fit quite well, the "firewall" is not included so I made one:
Of course the real car didn't have a floor in the engine bay (I assume the kit does because of the motorized aspect), so it got cut out:
With the rear crossmember installed, a test fit shows that the body panels all fit extremely well. Tamiya could take a few lessons here:
And it's going to be mostly a scratch build from here on.

I'm along for the ride also.
Is the basic chassis somewhat accurate?

I'm along for the ride also. Is the basic chassis somewhat accurate? It is dimensionally, there are a lot of details omitted, parts that will need to be reworked, but the body does look like a Lotus and some of the suspension should be OK. The power train is a joke, but the real problem is the tires don't look that great. We shall see.
It will look more like an early 33, the first 2 built had a 25 style tub, the later ones they squared off the top of the side tanks. I can live with that.

I like the early open wheel cars - looking forward to see what you can do with this Paul.

Paul I'm following your Lotus 33 build closely as I've got the Ebbro Lotus 33 that was recently released, and hoping to build it this year. I'm betting that with your skills, you'll end up with a darn good model of the 33.

An update. I decided one of my many spare tranny's will work OK, and it's a good starting point. I reinforced the rear crossmember and added 2 mounting points, I don't think it will look too out of place.
Started on the motor, I chopped up a Cosworth, shortened it and grafted the top end of the kit block onto it
Dimensionally it's correct. Test fit in the chassis to check location, clearances etc
so far so good. Now try to make it more Climax like
This project is proving to be a lot of work!!

It may be a lot of work. But the results are worth it. This is looking great
I like that trans.

Wolf, Was just researching 25s and 33s after viewing your project. Is it 20 or 24 scale? Found a photo of a 25 with as described "Squashed" rear chassis extensions to rear cross member. Described "Squashing" narrowed the chassis, plain to see that it is oval and not rectangular. Don't know how many were done his way but there are photos out there, should have saved it Dammit! (And I just sold ALL my Lotus/BRM projects for a Song.Thanx, John

Paul, The transaxle and your Modified Cosworth into a Climax really looks darn good. I'd say that all your efforts to date are more then well worth it.

I forgot to post these here. My bad!
Engine, intended to maybe look right when installed as opposed to "accurate", which it is not!!
And in the car with the ******'ing exhausts installed. Much cut and chop to make it look like a car, sort of.
Despite many careful checks and measurements to make sure it doesn't interfere with bodywork or suspension components, now that I've got it this far...........
it won't work!!
More cutting and chopping needed.
later

Working on the rear suspension. The doughnuts and springs from the kit, surprisingly nice. I made axles from tubing, drilled out the trans to fit, also the inner half of the hub, it will rotate and will be captured by the outer half of the hub (smaller hole).
I'll cut it flush once the other side is done. Some of the links are a bit crude but most are livable, but when I got it all together those trailing links really annoyed me. Too big, junk plating besides they're not straight. The left side, still original:
I'm replacing them with new rod. The right side fixed:
This build is proving to be a lot more than I anticipated, but in for a penny............
cheers

Paul, Don't sell yourself short. You're doing on heck of a job making a ancient UPC kit into way more then it was ever intended to be.
