So, after a couple days at work, I can show you what got done last weekend. Let's start with the addition of a few pieces to the upper body... needed to be drilled and rivets applied... And a fit test... I can see why this car got the nickname "the alligator car"... As you can see along the front of the cockpit, there is a considerable gap. I'm not going to do anything really radical until it comes time to permanently attach the nose. Then, I will decide how to repair that gap if needed... As to the gap along the sides, I think permanently attaching the side pods to the cockpit cover will eliminate that... there is no detail to be revealed by taking off the top piece, so it will get glued into place. Now to the color question... Chris used Tamiya TS56 on his car and it is a completely different color from the TS56 that I have... I did the spoon test... and I am sure that my iPhone camera has something to do with the hues depicted. On the right is the Tamiya TS 56 and on the left is the MCW McLaren orange which actually looks more red than it is in reality. I am just not sure about which choice to make... As always, your comments are welcome and appreciated!

Patrick, Excellent work on those upper body rivets. No issues about keeping the lines straight as far as I can see. As far as the nose clip gap, worse case scenario is just add some sheet plastic, but you need to do it before paint. And speaking of paint, you certainly got your monies worth out of those two spoons. Just enough room left for your fingers. As for the proper McLaren Papaya color from what I see on my monitor which most likely isn't what they actually look like, neither is correct. The one on the left looks way to Redish, and the one on the right does indeed looks more like a Tangerine color. Take a look at my Avatar. The picture is close but a shade or two to light. joel

Like I said, Joel, I’m not sure if it’s my iPhone but I’ll try using my Photo Booth and lights to get a more accurate color rendition. They don’t look at all like that in natural light!
The rivet lines from the side are really rough and not straight at all.
As for the bottom of the spoons, I use a block of floral foam and just stick the spoons I to hold them up!
The gap will get dealt with prepaint for sure.

Patrick, For me, I usually use Gravity of Spain or MCW for exact or as close as possible to the original color. Since the original Mclaren Papaya was sourced by whatever paint manufacture the auto supply they bought the paint from in New Zealand, who really knows what the correct formula is as most paints today seem to be Dupont formulated with their pigments. joel

I’ll post photos later but there are approximately 850 rivets on this kit!
I did get some painting done and some test spoons for the white. MCW recommends using their light grey primer and I wanted to test that against Tamiya’s fine white primer. I’ll photo that tomorrow.

Make that almost 1000 rivets since I found the rear wings is covered with them! Rear bulkhead with rivets (a friend pointed out that two were missing, so I fixed that) and the body color I have chosen... Rivets... lots of rivets... Speaking of rivets, this is how small they are... A view from the rear and above... Started work on the airbox and the front wing. Also, the rear wing above is not just the wing but eight pieces of PE holding the upper winglet above the main wing! Photos to follow! As always, your comments and criticisms are welcome! And help my prayers for no more rivets!

Patrick You're surely becoming the Rivet expert here. I can't imagine trying to work with parts that small, and you've got more then a 1,000 of them to install. joel

I lines of rivets on the wing came out much better. Only two out of line that I can see. Just need to smooth out the underside. Assemblies still needed are front wing, rear wing, exhausts, air box which will take some mods to get it to sit correctly. Back with more later! Thanks, Joel for your good words!

Man Patrick....you are doing a great job on this build. I have a few 1/20 and 1/43 MFH kits and they are really detailed. I Haven't started any of them yet, but I did open a few just for a look see. There are sure a lot of parts to be cleaned. Following your build sure is showing me some good learning material. As far as the paint on the body...I use CAN-AM McClaren Orange paint from ZERO Paints.....It looks the closest to being correct (if you will). Here's a link to hobby world for you to look at... hobbyworld-usa.com/index.php?controller=search&s=McClaren+orange Hope this helps you a little Patrick... Looking forward to your next update for sure...

Looking forward to your next update for sure... Thank you, Gary. I use MCW because they are 1) easy to use, 2) clean up is very easy), and 3) the paint does well with Tamiya TS13 (gloss clear coat). And you asked for an update? Check the next post!

Okay... it is amazing what you can get done when the yard chores are done and the wife is away on a visit to the grandkids... Front radiator attached. Side pods temporarily in place. Airbox fitted... All the subassemblies... side pods need one last coat of paint... Another view showing the mess... I am planning on using epoxy to connect the engine to the tub and to the transmission. It will provide a solid bond. I weighed the engine the other day and it is 8 ounces. That's a half pound that fits in the palm of your hand. So I need to make sure the bond is very strong as there are no cross members running underneath. The parts count of unused pieces is getting smaller and smaller! As always, your comments and criticisms are always welcome!

Patrick, The Mock up of the tub really looks like you've got all the major parts fitting quite nicely, as well as the completed engine with the air scoop on top.
