More progress today... Putting on the side pod decals... they don't roll over quite as far as one needs... and another application of Solvaset will hopefully deal with between the rivets... Pay no attention to the rough appearance of the white top shell, please. It has only been sanded with a 600 grit and will require a reshoot as I sanded through a couple of spots on the windscreen. So, you make your own paint mix to match the brownish decal color. It was orange, red, and brown mix... to match the front and rear decal of the above side pod... I'd say I got it matched pretty close... the third try is the middle. And thank goodness for the plastic sleeve as I could paint right on it and still compare to the decal! The other side isn't quite so bad as it has just black and red... Tried AlClad Aqua Gloss for the clear over the decals and then polished with Novus #2 polisher... As always, your comments and criticisms are always welcome.

If you have been paying attention, you will notice I have not posted since mid-August. And here is why...
I finally did it. I screwed up a kit that cost in the neighborhood of $500 USD with paint, tools, etc. And how did I commit such a grievous act? And why can't I recover from it?
It is because I tried something new... I tried using a certain paint product and their "gloss coat" which is an enamel and a hardener as they recommended. The surface was cleaned and prepped and as usual, like I have dozens of times prior, I vacuumed, clean the filters and then gently sprayed the interior of my paint booth. I then turned on the light, the fan, and placed said top shell of the kit on a turntable for painting.
And I got fisheyes... all over the nose of the shell... and I'm not talking one or two. THere are so many, I'm afraid to take a photo because of embarrassment. And said manufacturer says the only way to remove their product is probably with brake fluid... which I am sure will dissolve EVERYTHING including the hundreds of rivets that I put in place which means I need to buy more, then repaint, then USING SOMEONE ELSE'S products, try to repaint and apply gloss. The only good thing I can say is that there were no decals applied or else, I would really be screwed.
If any of you want to know the product, then PM me and we will talk about it. It has been about three weeks and I am still so mortified, I haven't taken photos. And I am seriously entertaining that maybe this "hobby" has passed me by. I thought I was a good (not great like Pascal or Chris Smith or Wolfie or 2whl) but passable. Now I am not so sure.
Oh well, it's coming on to winter and maybe over the season, something or someone will have some advice. But as for now, I'm thinking of buttoning it up for at least winter. At least, books and music never broke my heart.

Patrick, I was getting concerned that something much worse has happened to you or a family member, and you just don't have the time or focus to model right now. (That's why I haven't posted a single update on the 300 SL for more then a month now), so I'm glad that it's only model related. If you're up to the trashing stage, then you don't have anything to loose to try stripping the clear enamel sealer, decals, paint, primer down to the bare shell. You can't screw anything up that's already screwed up. So the advantage is yours so to speak.
Oven cleaner, and a lot of it in a Zip Loc Freezer bag will eventually do the trick. I've stripped plastic models from all stages of paint and finish, and honestly never had any issues with it attacking the plastic. Can't speak for White Metal as I've never worked with it but if it doesn't harm plastic, the metals should be ok. Also, it hasn't dissolved glue, and since you mostly use epoxy you should be fine.
Just remember at this point, you've got nothing to loose, and a good $500 to gain.

Joel,
Thanks for your words! Two things come to mind…
It is one single piece (I’ll take a photo or two today). And the rivets were all placed with whatever they call the modelers version of super glue. No metal or decals were involved. And if the rivets come out, maybe it will give me an opportunity to straighten the alignment of them.
Guess I’ll have the wife buy 4 cans of EZ Off at Costco.
And thanks… no humans were injured in this colossal screw up, just my pride.

EZ OFF I'm not so sure, it doesn't usually hurt styrene but I'm not sure what it would do to resin. I'd test it first.
Lacquer thinners should work. Don't soak the part, take a soft cloth and dip it in thinners, rub gently, the paint will soften and eventually come off. Warning: Wear gloves and a respirator. Do this outdoors and at least 2 miles from any campfire.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice and the laugh this morning Paul! I'll give it a go...

Best news I have received in some time... the part RE1 which is the top of the shell is available from MFH and is only $36 with shipping. I have also ordered a different style of rivet and will see how noticeable the differences are... otherwise, I will be ordering new rivets from Tom Anyz.
I am also going to buy a tool that should help me keep the rivets in a better line than the first time. And I still don't know what paint to use since the bottom is already MCW (without the gloss). I may not use a gloss at all!
Whew! That was a close one but since this is only my second MFH kit, I think I dodged a major bullet!

Received part along with origami swan from Kyoko-San with her customary handwritten note! Now waiting on better weather and a more open schedule to start drilling out all those rivet holes again. Plus, I am waiting on new rivets to see how much they differ from Tom Anyz product!
Happiest of holidays to you all!

Just a thought Patrick, but I use the heads from steel dressmakers pins as rivets. Try one, it never hurts to experiment.
And happy holidays to you too!

What do you use? And remember, there are about a billion of them! You're not talking about the colored balls, are you?

I use these for a ton of things as well. Must have about 100 of them in various states of chopped up plus a box full of whole ones. Lol

I ordered more from Tom Anyz so they will match the lower pods.
But the Brabham BT45 and BT46B will have plenty as well!
