Well, it’s time to start my next build after the Tamiya 1/20 scale 1979 Martini Lotus Type 79 crossed the finish line last week. The kit I’ve selected is the brand new Nunu 1/24 scale BMW M8 GTE car designed specifically for the IMSA Weather Tech Sports Car USA series. The box version is the car that won it’s class at the 2019 Daytona 24 hr. race while I’ve elected to use the SK decal set for the class winning car the following year at the 6 hr. Road Atlanta race. I also decided for some strange reason to purchase the Nunu detail up set that contains plenty of PE and a few sheets of Carbon Fiber decals. The SK decals also contains a lot of Carbon Fiber decals, so I should be covered for any mistakes I make in applying these decals, some of which are quite large. As usual I didn't follow the kit instructions as to build sequence, preferring to assemble the full body and additional parts such as the rear wing assembly, so that I can prep, prime, paint, decal, and gloss coat the body. Ready for primer coat: I primed the body with my custom primer mix of Tamiya Lacquer Gray and white primers 50/50 then thinned 1:1 with Mr. Color Leveling thinner #400: Next up is the Red Color coats once I finalize the actual paint. joel

Joel,
I'm looking forward to this one! It's too bad they only run these cars in the Endurance Cup part of the IMSA series. I would have liked to have gotten a close-up look at them this year at the VIR.
BTW, when you get to the wheels, the instructions call for copper, which is too bright. None of the usual paint companies have BBS Bronze, but I found Tamiya X33 Bronze to be a decent match. Also, those two flat parts that fit inside the radiator vents on the hood are best left off until after you've decaled and clear coated them and the body.

Ben, Thanks for the tip on the wheel color. I've got several pics and none seem to have the same shade of Bronze. Will take your expert advice and go with Tamiya X33. Odds are I don't have it in my Tamiya paints, so here comes another small online order. And thanks for the tip on those air splitters if that's their function in those radiator hood vents. Will have to keep on checking the fit after each step so that there's no surprise down the road as to fit.

Not much modeling time these days as all we seem to do is go for medical tests and see specialists. Getting old sure sucks right about now. Anyway, I’ve managed to apply the Red body color with a slightly doctored mix of two different shades of Gravity Red, one new bottle and one very used one. Totally forgot about the lower rear bumper that needs to be painted in what looks like a rubberized molded part but not Carbon Fiber. So I masked the bumper off and then covered the entire body with a Ziplock bag and a lot of Tamiya tape. I decided that the closest I could come to that look is with Mr. Finisher Surfacer Black 1500 but thinned by eye less then 1:1 for that surface texture in the picture. Looks a little to rough, so I’ll give it a wet sand with Tamiya 3,000 sponge. As you can see I started to decal the body when I realized that I forgot about painting the rear bumper. Here’s an overall pic of the start of the engine hood and roof. There’s more then 120 decals from both the SK and Detail set that needs to be applied, so I’ll be at my favorite part of the build for quite some time. joel

Joel, I did the exact same thing on mine, and fortunately I had started the decals on the front of the model, too. Great minds think alike (or forget alike)! I’m glad you were able to save it. Ben

120 decals?
Better you than me, my friend.
And your bumper looks perfect!

I’ll be watching 👀 Chris, Looks like almost all of the current GT3 cars are available in 1/18 scale as high-end die casts, if you're willing to pay 150-250 bucks for one. Sadly, it's looking like that's going to be the only way I'm ever going to get a Huracan GT3 on my shelf. Ben

Ben The die cast cars look good, but they defeat the purpose of building a quality kit..I will live out my race car fantasy one 1/12 scale kit at a time 😁😝🤣🤣

Paul & Chris, Thanks guys for your thumbs up, as always it's greatly appreciated.
Paul, just new that you've love that decal count, but that encompasses the exterior body shell, the interior, and the chassis which is all Carbon Fiber. Not saying I'm going to be successful with all of that as i really don't see much of a purpose for a shelf display model to be decaled on the bottom that will never been seen. All those decals came with the PE detail set that I finally wanted to try one for myself to see it most of it is really worth it.
Chris & Ben, I'm not a collector by any means, so 1/18 scale diecasts aren't even a consideration for me even before seeing their cost. Like Chris said, I'm a modeler builder, and enjoy the ride. But I wouldn't be totally surprised to see some of the limited run guys making GT3 multi media kits down the road as they're always looking for new subjects of interest that will sell.
