I'm counting on you to do much better! I still need to flat coat them or something, after the PE bits are put on. Should have clear coated them prior to installing, that 20/20 hindsight thing got me again. Just a note, the first two pipes are a bear to put on. And I'm not talking Panda bear, I'm saying big, old mean grizzly that just got woken up. The other 6 pretty much fall into place but it'll still be a relief to get those pipes done!

jimc7, Holly Cow!! those exhaust headers look great. To bad that technique doesn't work for plastic parts.

Yeah, I'm not at all happy but time off from work is so limiting right now. First experience with white metal... what is best way to strip AlClad which is what is on there...

What did you use as the template for the decals on the header pipes, Jim?

jimc7, Holly Cow!! those exhaust headers look great. To bad that technique doesn't work for plastic parts. Joel Thank you Joel, that means a lot to me! It should work on plastic since I covered the white metal completely with primer and gloss black. Just the stainless steel tips were heat treated.
Patrick, I meant I'm counting on you to do much better than I did. You know, learn from my mistakes...don't forget to add the little PE parts first, clear coat before installing, and whatever else. This was the first time I did exhausts this way, I usually go for aluminum/silver or white. But the photos that have been posted here showed that something else needed to be done. As far as decals, the only ones are on the rocker covers which I graciously received from Henryk on the other site. I could never design something like that! If you need a set printed I'll gladly send them to you.
I will say this, the engine has a nice heft to it with all the metal parts on it!

Oh, and you shouldn't need to strip the headers if you are going to paint over them. The stainless steel tips can just be lightly sanded and polished to bring them back.

I got the same files from Henryk so I guess we will all have the same engine designations. Thanks for the reminders on the PE that needs to be installed prior to painting. As far as learning, I will try to do so. I am still going to do a bit of clean up on the pipes. Here is another problem... the kit supplied collectors (which narrow four pipes per side to one) have a connecting rod with an upright post that goes on the top of the engine. It gives the correct downward angle for alignment of the pipes. There is no such piece for the white metal and they are supplied as two separate pieces and not one single piece as with the kit. How did you deal with that?

It's a good engine designation, Patrick! I'm just happy that Henryk was kind enough to share his work and I got to add that extra detail.
Ah, the fun part of installing the exhausts. I screwed up royally with that and will live with the consequences since I'm not patient enough to redo the whole thing. If I were to do it again I would glue the tips to the collectors first. Glue the rear half circle PE cradles in place. Dry fit the first 2 pipes (#4 & #5), set the tips in the cradle and make sure the collectors are even with each other and the other pipe holes oriented correctly. The angle of the tips should pretty much take care of itself at this point and the collectors will just float in place as all the other metal will hold them up. I had to make some small adjustments on the first 2 pipes to get everything lined up. Once you're happy, glue the tips in the cradles, then glue the pipes in. Most importantly, celebrate when done!
Have you given the oil filter any thought? I don't mind the kit part except it has no top! Any ideas on what to do with that? Will it even be seen?

I have but the oil filter is buried so far beneath everything, I don't think I will bother. Where I do want to excel is on the fuel pumps. I have ordered everything to do those justice since they are very obviously in view... Those will be important. I just wish I could quit finding ways to spend money on fittings, and decal paper and this and that... it's getting costly!

That's good news on the oil filter, I'm with you on it's good enough!
Looking forward to seeing your fuel pumps as I have no clue what to do with them to make them look reasonably good. What did you order if you don't mind me asking? It can be an expensive hobby at times, I seem to spend more on kits that I wonder when I'll ever build then anything else.
Not sure when you will be doing the drive shafts (half shafts?). As you know the KA shafts are too long compared to the kit pieces, and Henryk cut and drilled them. I don't have the skill set to drill that precisely so I came up with another way that you may want to consider. I cut a section off the shafts and used aluminum tubing, I believe 1/4" and 7/32, which slide in and out perfectly. Not sure if they look the part but like I said I wouldn't have been able to drill them out without ruining them. Here's the original KA and kit parts with my new one.

The drive shaft looks great Jim, I'll squirrel that one away for my build later this year. The kit example is woeful.
I would be interested in a copy of the rocker cover decal file if you would like to share.
Keep up the good work you guys.

Send me an email in a PM and I'll send it to you tomorrow. There are some other things on the decal file. You will need white decal paper to print them. Patrick

So the drive shafts, I have shortened them but I'm not real happy with the result just yet. They are cut and one is sort of jerry rigged but I'm not fond of it. I may encase them in aluminum tube. I am not precise enough either... Let me address the drive shafts further and trade some info... I am going to fabricate the inner shaft mounts as Henryk did but I have not found a source for the rubber boots that are simulated in plastic on the kit drive shafts. Any suggestions? I looked on a couple of other kits that I have but no luck. I may have to search some more. As to the fuel pumps... I have some bronze craft wire that I can use to make the "bails" on the lower part. I think I can cut off the top of two of them and use some very small nuts that I have in my parts box for them after cutting some circles out of card stock. That should do it for the fuel pumps. There is one that seems to have the top still as on the kit parts. As far as the hoses on the fuel pumps, I have seen two different set-ups so I'll decide on that next. I am waiting on some angled fittings from AZ right now from Top Studio. I also am trying to think ahead and use Henryk's cut outs on the two uprights that screw down onto the lower tub. And I am not sure about replicating his large radiator tubes that he fabricated to go into the main tub. I like how they look but I'm not sure if they are necessary. I'll probably end up doing them. BTW, shrink wrap sure does work for doing hose ends! (Henryk's large tubes are on page 3 seventh photo down... you can also see where he "lightened" the side uprights but drilling them out. For weight I have seen some dashboards drilled out as well...) Glad there is someone else along for the ride, Jim!

This is fun, isn't it Patrick? I'm enjoying working on the same kit and being at about the same point of construction as you are. And we both seem to be jumping around the instructions too! I've cleaned up the rear clip, opened the vents and started working on the dashboard while just finishing step 3, lol. Did the seats too, except for the harness. I like Henryk's blue ribbon belts compared to the black kit ones so will see if I can find some blue or red ribbon cheap.
I think I'll shorten the larger tube on the shafts and be happy with them, far cry from the kit version. At first I thought the KA upgrade was overpriced but the more I use of it the happier I am I've got it. I was going to try to modify the kit boots first, or maybe try decreasing sizes of rubber O rings. Maybe make something up and cast it in resin. I just don't know yet. If you find something please let me know.
What I've done so far on the fuel pumps is drill out the connecting shaft between the 3 pumps, wasn't happy with the way it looked glued together. Will use a piece of brass rod there. This will also make it easier to clean up and finish them neatly since they are 3 separate pieces now, or at least I hope it'll be easier! Tried a few times to fabricate the bails with no luck, I think I will need to make a simple jig to bend the wire. As far as the plumbing I think I'm going to wimp out and use whatever the kit supplies and specifies, will probably change my mind once I see yours!
And, yup, already opened up the side uprights and will most likely add the extra pipes.
Looking forward to seeing how your chassis looks all painted!
