Ron, Double thumbs up. Just a great build of a iconic car. Even the color white turned into a important side trip that I know I learned from as I tended to look at white more like black then as a color with an endless number of shades.

Guys, New to the Forum. The P***** Pandemic is keeping me researching cars and buying off eBay and starting on projects I used to have and lost. No matter how many years roll by you always see something you never saw before (or knew). The Chap 2C photo for instance, I have never (except for the 2C photo I got as a kid from Jim Hall autographed) saw 2C without stickers this IS the Nassau pre-race photo. I stopped at Midland Texas two times, Jim let me photograph whatever I wanted and let Troy Rogers show me around. I also took numerous photos at Monterey Historics when Chaparral was the featured mark. I can positively state that Chaparrals were a bright "Refrigerator" White with NO yellow tint! I've read in old model car magazines (Pedro Rodriguez was good on paint tint) that you had to add some drops of blue to it. White will eventually yellow, not wanting to be Anal but the yellow tint keeps popping up.

I don't know if its sheer co-incidence or an evil omen that this thread got resurrected the same day I received my Chaparral 2D kit in the mail. Some observations, from an old guy who can't remember where he left his keys, but recalls 1964 in crystal clarity. Some of you might relate to that.
The Chaparrals first showed up at Mosport in 1964, both for the Players 200 and then the GP. They were called Chaparral 2's then, not "2A's", and they didn't do very well. But they were well received by the Canadian fans, Jim Hall seemed a very likeable guy, and we already knew Roger Penske. I was 12 yrs old, and I got to meet him, briefly. The cars were an off white colour, mainly because it was after the race and they had a film of oil on them like everybody else. You can duplicate this effect perfectly by painting your model pure white, then applying a Testors clear enamel overcoat and waiting a month. In 65 they were back, and serious. Hall was 2nd to Surtees in the 200, 2nd and 3rd to McLaren at St Jovite, and Hall won the Cdn GP at Mosport in what was probably the greatest race he ever drove. He started dead last on the grid, caught race leader McLaren with a few laps to go, and the two of them swapped the lead over and over, Hall just squeaking it. The fans went nuts, as beating Bruce McLaren at Mosport was no mean feat. Oh, the Chaparral was a 2, not a 2C, and it was off white, before and after the race. In 66 Phil Hill finished 2nd to Donahue in the Can Am race, and the Chaparral's never came back. They had a lot of fans up here who were very disappointed in them. I built all the Chaparral kits when I was a teenager, long gone of course, maybe if I live long enough I can duplicate them. They will be off white.
Cheers guys

I just received the April 1966 issue of Motor Racing (a very good British magazine) with an excellent Best photo of the "Refrigerator White" Chaparral 2C, looks like Riverside, definitely NOT Nassau, carbs are low and "Bird shooter" exhausts, rear body off, great detail. Since the 2C had an aluminum chassis the only one you can really use is the IMC/Union 2E chassis, there is no "Good" automatic transmission to use (I was blessed to take photos of the auto trans on a trans stand which I guard like the "Crown Jewels", as well as the whole 2E under restoration) I plan on putting these on a website. I visited Midland, TX twice and Jim Hall was gracious enough to let me photograph all the Chaparrals and the GS II (another story) Troy Rogers escorted me around, gave me a press kit (after Al Unser won Indy for Chaparral the 1st time). I have a Renwal "Golden Chaparral that is still about the best 2A (plastic/glass chassis) kit made in 1/24. It is the only kit I've seen with accurate "Bird Shooters" with heat shields and connecting straps. But there's lots of Chaps out there, even the old Aurora will make a decent 1st version (would be nice with the high "Snowplow" front end with exposed over the body header exhausts. Now that's an idea.

Re: off white/refrigerator white chaparrals I grew up in Monterey, and saw the Chaparrals race at Laguna Seca from 1965 to 1969. In my memory as a Chaparral lover they were an OFF WHITE , on the warm yellowish side. The restored Chaparrals are refrigerator white. I saw them at Elkhart Lake Can Am reunion, and at Monterey historics. My personal opinion is everyone is “right” Just wanted to share my memory FWIW THANKS
