A friend on another forum, outstanding builder and very knowledgeable on rally called my attention to extremely over-sized engine in the Esci/Revel/Italeri kit.  To my eye the engine did appear oversized but until he sent me these photos I thought I could live with it.  Not now unfortunately so I'll have to go the scratch building route for much of the engine. Down the rabbit hole we go!!



Esci engine:


Hasegawa Lancia 037 engine or Esci Lancia Beta Montecarlo - both used the Fiat Twin-Cam as the base engine same as the 131

You'd almost say the kit motor is 1/20th scale. Hey, there's a thought!

That's the same motor that was in my Spyder, but I'm guessing your rallye cars have Webers instead of the Bosch injection.

The rallye cars ran both twin down draft Webers and Kugelfischer fuel injection early but settled on FI as the best option in the latter years.  The kit includes a fuel injection setup.

Started work on the engine based on the block/transmission from the Esci Ford Escort RS1800 and the twin-cam cylinder head from the Hasegawa Lancia 037.  The parts come from previously built kits I've acquired over the years.

Cylinder head fitted with intake plumbing started, oil pan modified with sump added:


Fuel injector trumpets:


Additional bolt detail and oil fill added to the cylinder head:

Your fabrication and attention to details is absolutely amazing. You even added the four freeze out plugs. This build is going to be truly something special.

I've ordered a few engines and gearboxes and should have them in the next few weeks.. Postage can be mysteriously slow from Italy 🤔

Maybe this should be a different thread to discuss this... Rather than trainwreking your WIP thread 😔
